In the city neighbourhood, silver was discovered in the 14th century; in the 16th century, the city was promoted to a royal mining town and the mining continued with intermissions until the 1970. In this period, the uranium mining grew more important, which made the city thrive, but also brought great suffering to the people in the neighbouring forced labour camps.
